Fireside Chat Recap: An Evening with BME Chair Dr. Cherie Stabler

On Tuesday, December 10, the New England Gator Club® hosted a memorable evening in the luxurious lounge of one of our board member's buildings.

The Fireside Chat featured an in-depth presentation by Dr. Cherie Stabler, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida. Although Dean Masters was supposed to attend as well, he was unable to attend due to a family emergency. Even so, Dr. Stabler captivated the audience with insights into groundbreaking research taking place at UF.

The event welcomed around 30 attendees, a mix of UF alumni and curious residents of the building. The ambiance was elegant and professional, great for an engaging evening of conversation and innovation.

Dr. Stabler highlighted several fascinating projects underway at UF, emphasizing the university’s leadership in biomedical engineering. Among the key initiatives discussed were:

  • Dr. Kyle Allen’s work on the mechanisms of pain perception, exploring how we experience and manage pain.

  • Dr. Ruogu Fang’s advancements in artificial intelligence, including applications in healthcare and beyond.

  • Dr. Ivana Parker’s efforts to increase population diversity in genetic datasets, a critical step toward equitable medical research.

  • Dr. Cherie Stabler’s own research on Type 1 Diabetes, focusing on developing innovative treatments.

A central theme of the evening was the emerging role of artificial intelligence: its exciting possibilities, its current limitations, and the uncharted territory it presents.

Dr. Stabler encouraged attendees to ask questions throughout her talk, sparking lively discussions that carried over into the mingling sessions before and after the presentation. One attendee perfectly summed up the enthusiasm of the crowd, saying, “I would love to come out to more events like this one.”

The event not only showcased UF’s cutting-edge research but also underscored the value of fostering deeper connections between Boston-based Gators and their alma mater. We’re excited to build on this momentum and explore more opportunities to bring similar events to our community in the future.
